In the context of green building solutions, some products defy convention and offer themselves by harmonising technology, performance and low environmental impact. Among these, the pre-mixed thermal screed stands out as an innovative response to the growing need for thermal and acoustic insulation of indoor environments.

Designed to meet new market requirements for energy savings, acoustic comfort, and environmental protection, the pre-mixed thermal screed is a granular powder based on cork, clay, and NHL5 hydraulic lime.

vThe material combines high thermal and acoustic performance standards, ensuring a significant green connotation. It is among the leading materials in a more sustainable and conscious building direction.

What is a thermal screed, and how is it composed

The thermal screed is the result of an original combination of natural materials, including our flagship product, cork, and carefully selected thermal aggregates, to be mixed with water at the time of use. Its composition, thanks to its natural materials and the formula that characterises it, guarantees high levels of protection with low thicknesses, avoiding the weighing down of floors and acting as an effective barrier against unwanted noise from conduction, falling and treading.

Its applications vary widely: on subfloors, in the embedding of installations, on existing ground or floor slabs, on balconies, terraces, attics and flat or sloping roofs, to provide acoustic insulation concerning footfall, as well as being particularly suitable for correcting thermal bridges at the extrados of balconies. The low density allows for the renovation of period buildings without impacting the pre-existing structure, contributing to developing a sustainable architectural practice that respects traditions.

Preparation is quick and straightforward, requiring only the mixing of the granulate with water to a consistency that allows good adhesion to the substrate. The recommended dose is 11 – 12.5 litres of water per 25 kilos of screed. The versatility of a thermal screed can be seen during the laying process, which can be carried out manually with a site concrete mixer or a plastering machine. Its lightness and ease of processing allow for a significant reduction in time and costs.

Versatility, durability, innovation

As we have seen in the previous section, the thermal pre-mixed insulating screed reveals its effectiveness in various scenarios, positively influencing the design and construction of buildings.

This approach solves noise and thermal issues and offers a tangible advantage due to the low density of the thermal screed, allowing buildings to be renovated without overloading the existing structure.

In line with regulatory requirements, the screed is excellent at combating heat loss, ensuring comfort and energy savings. In addition, it contributes to thermal insulation and plays a key role in acoustic insulation, providing comfortable and disturbance-free environments.

It is also a material with a low environmental impact, based on natural substances such as cork, clay, diatomaceous earth and hydraulic binder, which do not require hazardous chemical processes either during production or disposal. The screed, therefore, helps to contain energy consumption while reducing money spent on energy bills and contributing to the decarbonisation of the construction sector. In addition, it is a durable material that offers high-profile thermal-acoustic performance.

Our thermal insulating screed

In our ongoing commitment to excellence in green building solutions, we present our cork-based biomalta: Diathonite Screed. We understand that innovation and sustainability are key to shaping the future of construction, and Diathonite Massetto is a tangible testament to our dedication to creating cutting-edge solutions aligned with the needs of the modern world.

Diathonite Screed, with its green composition and excellent performance, stands out as a smart choice for those looking for the maximum thermal and acoustic comfort. Its thermal conductivity (λ = 0,060 W/mK) and Euroclass A1 fire reaction testify Diasen commitment to offer a high quality and safe product.

The careful selection of natural raw materials makes the product light, facilitating its applicability and considerable sound insulation, ensuring a serene and comfortable indoor environment.

Performance certifications, including CE marking, LEED v4 BD+C and ID+C recognition, EPD certification and low emission of volatile organic compounds reflect our ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly solutions. In addition, Diathonite Massetto contributes to healthier spaces, better indoor air quality and energy savings. Its versatility makes it ideal for renovation and restoration projects, where lightness and performance come together in a combination of elegance and functionality.
