The most common cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete is the formation of rust on the armor iron bars. The oxygen naturally present in air and water, once in contact with the surface of iron armor, initializes the oxidation process that creates the rust.
The volume increase of the iron bars causes the separation of the concrete covering the reinforcement armor, with the consequent exposure of portions of armor each time larger, which inevitably tend to oxidize, thus increasing the area of portions of deteriorated concrete.
