Correction of thermal bridges

A thermal bridge is a construction discontinuity in every structure, caused by the presence of two adjacent materials having different thermal characteristics. A thermal bridge has a negative impact on the thermal insulation capacity of a structure, as it is a privileged way for the heat to move outward (and inward).

The thermal bridges can be of two kinds:

• Construction thermal bridges, represented by the contact between different materials with different thermal characteristics. The typical example of this type of thermal bridge is represented by beams and pillars of reinforced concrete in contact with walls.
• Geometric thermal bridges, represented by geometric discontinuities such as edges, corners, connections between walls, connection between walls and frames.

The effects of incorrect insulation of thermal bridges are:

• heat loss outward, resulting in higher costs for climate;
• cooling of areas close to the thermal bridge, resulting in the formation of mold and condensation.

The correct insulation of thermal bridges is an extremely important aspect in the design of the thermal insulation of a structure, since heat losses due to non-correction of thermal bridges account for 10% of the global dispersion of a structure.
